"The saddest aspect to this tragedy is that so many watched it happen and few did anything to stop it. I pray that Michael's death will not be in vain and that we see a return, even among Hollywood celebrities, to the spiritual and family values that are life sustaining." -- Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, longer-term counselor for Michael Jackson This week, two major celebrities died: Michael Jackson and Farah Fawcett. Both had more than their fair share of talent, fame, and wealth, yet both seemed to come up short in life. Jackson holds the record for having the highest selling album of all time; Farah was nearly a household icon in her heyday as an original "Charley's Angel." Michael Jackson was married to the King's daughter (Lisa Mari Presley); Farah Fawcett to a six-million dollar man. Yet neither achieved true satisfaction. After a burst of fame in the 80's, Michael set out on an endless journey of trying to find out who he really was. Countless plastic surgeries later, he still didn't know even at the age of 50. The consummate entertainer, Jackson filled the lives of his fans, but couldn't fill his own life, turning to a long list of drugs which may have contributed to his early death. And then there were the boys... Farrah Fawcett's life was not nearly so strange as Michael Jackson's, but it was still filled with a quest to be noticed. Starting out as "eye-candy" in Charlie's Angels, she longed to be taken seriously as an actress but somehow managed to default to "eye candy" once again in 1995, posing for Playboy Magazine when her son was 10 years old. She got noticed all right, but maybe in the wrong way? This tale of two celebrities comes up empty in the end. They had everything, but longed for more. Many years ago, Blaise Pascal noted that every human being has a God-shaped hole in their heart which only God can fill. Until we let Him, we'll come up empty every time.
